I've had one of these Nathan water bottles for about a year now, and I love it. I also freaked out when it spouted water through the straw like some of the other reviewers, but I quickly figured out how to deal with it. The issue is that is seals tightly when the straw is down, so as it warms up inside, the pressure increases. All you have to do is unscrew the cap a little bit to release the pressure first, rescrew, and then flip the straw up to drink happily with no mess.

My bottle has dented and chipped a bit from dropping, but it still works great. It now looks like a well-loved water bottle, which is part of the point, right? To keep a bottle for a long time instead of using the harmful plastic ones. I love the straw, the built-in carabiner, and the fact that it fits in my bike holder, my purse ad my messenger bag perfectly.

I love the polar bottle! Its now a habit for me to fill one up with ice water every morning and carry it with me all day. The loop on top is very convenient for attaching it to my keys or just grabbing it with one finger. I had to buy more bottles because my grown daughter keeps "borrowing" them and forgetting to bring them back. My husband scoffed at them until I sent one with him to the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia this summer. It was very hot there and he always had cold water. He is now hooked also. I like the fact that I am reusing as opposed to recycling. These bottles don't leach chemicals after reuse and I prefer my filtered water to bottled water anyway!

Let me start by saying what a well made product this clearly is. I've owned CamelBaks in the past but was frustrated that it wasn't modular allowing me to retrofit other backpacks with hydration if they weren't specifically built for hydration. I'm talking about the cheap, or general purpose packs you buy in Wal-Mart or target. (for the most part)

Now, on to the main reason I'm writing this review.

After reading the other reviews of this product on this very page I was very close to not purchasing the UnBottle system and looking for a "normal" CamelBak system. After taking the plunge I'm very pleased to report that all the whiners in the reviews on this page are very clearly wrong.

For one, these so called *mystical* clips for which no one can imagine a use are very easily used with even a half a brain. By simply attaching to the webbing of a pack or using a nylon strap tethered to a larger pack, one can effortlessly use the clips to securely attach this system to most bags.

Two, anyone who's owned a Camelbak for longer than a day knows that the bladders are always removable. This one is no exception. Its just the same as the previous generation, you'll have to play with the plastic cap section to wiggle it out, but its do-able.

Three, the insulating sleeve is fantastic and while it is large... how the heck are you supposed to insulate 2L of fluid in an automatic dispensing system and NOT have it be at least a *little* big? Again, another common sense thing that requires no special users manual.

Four, so what if it tastes like plastic, would you like it to taste like metal? How about fungi? That plastic is antimicrobial and is stopping your drink from fermenting in the sun. If it's too much to handle, buy a CamelBak cleaning kit and clean it out properly, not some cheap baking soda magical remedy. Come on people, this isn't rocket science!

So in closing, I'm glad I ignored the whiners and just bought it. It's an effective system for taking regular backpacks you already have, and making them top of the line hydration systems. This means you don't need a special CamelBak for more, or less storage or portability. The sleeve works as advertised to insulate and protect while giving the average user common sense options to mount the unbottle to most backpacks and heck, why mount it when you can just slip it in the pack itself, works fantastic.

This is my #1 water bottle - the "don't even think about touching it!" bottle - the bottle I give as gifts, and I was a major Sigg fan.

Why so awesome:
1) Has NEVER EVER leaked - even when I left it filled side-wise "open" in my car - can be tossed in the bottom of a 6th grader's bag and not spill over his math homework that is also inexplicably at the bottom of his bag
2) No funny after-taste (granted I have never left it prolonged in direct sun exposure or in a hot car)
3) Bite valve easy-to-use, I have no trouble using it even during extreme can-barely-get-a-word-out cardio
4) Fits perfectly in standard bike cage and carabiner clip gives great place to grab to pull it out for single-handed use but is also fairly light

Hiking Hydration Packs - Leg Cramps While Hiking

Leg cramps can occur in many sports, but hiking is perhaps a sport where they cause the most surprise. If your cycling or running you are probably training and more aware of the various factors that can effect your performance. However, many people hike occasionally without really training or preparing.

The most common place for cramps to strike when you are out hiking is either in your thighs of calves. And they can be horribly painful! But the cause will often be overlooked, or put down to a lack of 'fitness'. Well in many cases simply ensuring you are properly hydrated will prevent this problem in the first place.

Cramps can usually occur due to either dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance, or just plain old muscle fatigue. The later could certainly be the case if you have been pushing yourself; perhaps on steep inclines where calves could be taking an unusual amount of the strain. However, dehydration is often atleast partly to blame and often overlooked.

The answer is to make sure you think about hiking hydration both before and during the trek. In the hours leading up to the hike, its so easy to make sure you are properly hydrated. Drink water or sports drink until you are regularly passing almost clear urine frequently. This indicates you are well hydrated to start with. You should start this process 3-4 hours before you leave. Unless you want to be running behind a bush after 10 minutes of hiking, you might want to stop taking in fluids in the hour directly before you leave.

Once out hiking take regular sips of water or a sports drink. Many sports drinks contain electrolytes which are essential for normal hydration. Whilst electrolyte imbalances are unlikely to be an issue, you might prefer a sports drink.

Also Consider a hiking hydration pack. Many walkers keep their fluids in a bottle in their backpack. Taking a drink means taking off your backpack. Consequently, they often don't drink regularly enough. Many good backpack hydration packs are available from brands like Camelback, Dakine, Deuter etc. Platypus and Camelbak (as well as others) also do hydration pack inserts, which you can put inside your own back pack. Whichever you choice, a hiking hydration pack will allow you to sip regularly (every 5 minutes) ensuring you are constantly rehydrating.

The floor pump take far fewer strokes to get a tire up to pressure making it less of a pain to inflate a tire. The mini pumps work but I only use it for on the ride repairs as they have you pumping like a mad man to get up to pressure. Far better than walking but not something I want to do every few days.

Repair Kit

Like the boy scout motto goes, "Always be prepared". Get one of the little bags that strap under your saddle and fill it with a spare inner tube, patch kit, tire levers, fold out mini tool (allen keys, screw drivers and chain breaker) and mini pump. With this kit you can take care of most of the problems you will run into while out riding.

Chain Lube and Cleaning Supplies

A clean and lubricated chain is a happy chain. You will have better shifting and longer life to all your drive train parts if you clean and lube your chain regularly. If your lazy like me you can use Rock and Roll gold chain lube which clean and lubricates in one step.

Gloves

Whether for comfort, protection or warmth, cycling gloves are a must have. You can do short rides without them but just like the bike shorts, having gloves reduces pressure and chafing.

Vest and Warmers

A wind vest, arm warmers and knee warmers take a summer cycling outfit and extends the temperature range down by 10 degrees. Of particular utility is the fact that on a cool summer morning your can start with these pieces on and as it warms up can remove and store them in your jersey pocket.

Sport Glasses

You need to protect your eyes from the sun, wind and debris. In expensive sport glasses are available with interchangable lenses so one set will cover all lighting conditions. All it takes is one bug in the eye to see how important eye protection is.

Hydration System

This can be bottles and cages on the bike or a Camelbak hydration backpack. If you are riding for more than 30 minutes or it's hot out you need to rehydrate. You need 750-1000 ml of fluid per hour of riding and you need some way to carry it.

Light Set

Even if you are a road rider who only goes out during the day light, at some point you will get caught out as the sun goes down. A small LED front and rear light can be the difference between making it home safe and getting run over. Many of the small lights will go on your bike without adding much weight or wind drag but they are there when you need them. If you ride at night regularly a more powerful front light that throws enough light to light your way.

Bike Knowledge

All of the cool accessories in the world won't do anything if you don't know how to use them. Check with your local bikes shop or community college as they often offer bike repair courses. If you develop the skills, things like flat tires, misaligned gears and mushy brakes will be simple fixes you can do yourself and keep riding.

Just what I needed for my hydration pack. I have a 4L Platypus hydration bladder that I use in a climbing pack. Sometimes in transporting the bag in back of the car, etc the weight of the bag would shift onto the valve and cause the water to drain - didn't seem to matter where or how I placed the bag it always seemed to find a way to press against the valve - and this shut-off valve is the perfect solution. Now I can turn off the valve until I am ready to use it. No more empty hydration bladder upon arival at the crag.

I bought a couple of these to replace the BPA-laden water bottles I had been using.

I really like the 750 ml bottles... they are easy to hold, they fit in my backpack for hiking/biking and it's really easy to add a lot of ice. They do sweat a lot, but I suppose all bottles with cold water do that. I also like the lip on the lid which aids in it's removal.

I do agree with some posters that the mouth is a bit too large and it's easy to spill when you aren't careful. I can live with that.

I also purchased a 1 L bottle. This one is too big for my liking because it won't fit in my small cooler, it's a tad heavy when completely full and it's more difficult to hold because of it's diameter.

I will likely purchase 1 or 2 additional 750ml bottles in the future. Although I purchase a ton of stuff from Amazon, I found these bottles to be less expensive at a local sporting goods retailer.

It is often thrown into the 'extreme sports' category, but shares little in common with such sports as skateboarding or trick biking. A mixture of ski slalom and intense trail riding, a good mountain Bike race is exhilarating to watch but even more fun to ride.

When you think about mountain Bike racing, if you have at all, you probably think it's just for crazy young people. The truth, however, is that people of all ages and abilities can partake, from children to grown men and women.

Before jumping in, however, it's a good idea to learn the basics. This article will cover everything you need to know, so you can hit that trail today!

The Name of the Game is Fun

The first, and most important rule, to mountain bike racing is to have fun! Sure, in any competition, we want to win, but this sport is about the pure thrill of riding on new and exciting terrain, and a win is just the icing on the cake.

In order to keep things balanced, most races are broken up into different skill levels, so you'll always be riding against someone of comparable skill and experience. Categories are broken up by age, experience level, weight, and sometimes there are even men- or women-only races. Before signing up for one, check out what the race has to offer and sign up for the appropriate level.

Start Small

If you're just getting started, no matter how much riding you've done, it's a good idea to start at the lower, or beginner, levels. If you try to dive headfirst into an extreme race, you could lose your confidence, or worse, get injured. So start small, and once you have some experience you can move up to higher difficulties.

That said, if you really know what you're doing, don't take on a race that's way too easy for you. Just as you wouldn't like to be left in someone else's dust, it's not fun for other riders if you fly past them on a course below your level.

Also make sure you're in good physical condition. A mountain bike rice can be a strenuous affair, so make sure you've got plenty of practice on downhill rides, and on different terrain. Also make sure you've got the strength and endurance to finish a race. Make sure and check out how long a race is first.

Your Bike - Is it Ready?

Once you've ensured that your body is ready, it's time to check your Bicycle. It can be frustrating and potentially dangerous to breakdown mid-race, so always do a routine check-up before a race. Tune your bike, check tire pressure, check the brakes, and take it on a test run before tackling the challenge.

You should also consider what kind of components your bike has. A full suspension mountain bike can really help cushion those falls, but it also means a heavier bike, which may slow you down. A bike with a lighter frame is great, if you can afford it.

The general type of mountain bike matters as well. For trail races, a cross-country bike will keep you covered, but for serious downhill bike racing, you'll want a bike specifically designed for downhilling.

Finally, always carry an emergency repair kit. We recommend a good multi tool as well as a tire puncture repair kit and a water bottle.

Types of Racing

There are several different types of races. You may want to try them all, or focus on one kind. Let's take a look at the options:

Cross-Country:

The most common type of race, the cross-country (or XC) race is a direct competition where riders take on a pre-constructed trail or track. If there are a large number of riders, the race may be divided into sections, such that only a few riders go at a time. This is a fast-paced and intensive race, somewhat comparable to track-bike racing, only with obstacles and rough terrain.

Downhill:

This is a straight-shot downhill race. Riders go down one at a time and the fastest time wins. Usually the course will have both natural and man-made obstacles, such as ruts, jumps, boulders, and other obstructions. It is essential to have a clear view ahead of you at all times, so that you're surprised by any of the obstacles.

Downhill Slalom:

Similar to straight-forward downhilling, the slalom may take place on the same (or similar) course, except there are gates along the way. Just like in slalom skiing, the rider must pass around the edge of each gate. A penalty is given for any missed or touched gates, and the best time wins.

Hillclimb:

This is also an individual race against time. Much more physically taxing than the downhill ride, in the hillclimb the fastest rider to the top wins.

Important Tips Before you Race

Once you've picked out your race and bike, you're almost ready to hit the course. There are just a few more things you should keep in mind.

Practice: Before entering a serious race, you should have logged hundreds, if not thousands of hours riding your bike. The only way to get better is to keep doing it.

Know the risks: Competitive mountain biking can be a dangerous sport. Always wear a helmet, but know that it is a potentially dangerous extreme sport.

Hydrate: Always drink before the race, and keep a bottle or Camelbak with you at all times. Dehydration can stop you dead in your tracks.

Pace yourself: If you're in a long race, just like in a foot race, don't blow all your energy at the beginning.

How to Start Running - 10 Tips For Beginners From Someone Who's Been There

There is a funny saying that cross-country runners like to throw around that goes something like this: "Our sport is your sport's punishment." Unfortunately, this quote carries with it more than just a hint of truth - most people simply hate to run. Running is hard, it takes time that could be spent doing other things, and for many people running is painful, uncomfortable, and not the least bit enjoyable. Ask any serious distance runner, and they can recount to you the scorn they sometimes receive from friends and colleagues about the fact that they run. I can't tell you how many times people have told me that I'm going to ruin my knees, or that we as humans simply weren't meant to run long distances (which, as an anatomy professor and evolutionary biologist, I disagree with wholeheartedly). So how does one overcome this fear and loathing for all things related to running? In this article I'll provide 10 tips regarding what helped me the most during the first few months of my transition from being a couch-dweller to becoming a full-fledged runner.

I officially mark May 2007 as the date when I started running. When I say running, I mean really running, not just jogging a few miles here or there when I felt like it. May 2007 is when I began to really call myself a runner, when I began a habit that sticks with me to this day, and has become such an integral part of my life that I couldn't imagine living without it. Prior to this time, running was for me, as the saying at the beginning of this article alludes to, like a form of self-punishment. I did it because it was supposed to be good for me, or because some coach at some time ordered me to do it during some practice - I did not, however, enjoy running. That all began to change for me when I began to gain weight after the birth of my two kids. I realized that I was now in my 30's, and if I was going to take control of my health, I needed to start getting serious about exercise. This brings me to my first tip:

Tip #1 - Find a Source of Motivation For me, having children was the primary impetus for beginning my running habit. I wanted to get my health back under control, and I wanted to be able to keep up with two little kids as they grew up and became even more active. To this day, one of my main motivations for running is to set a good example about the importance of exercise for them. A secondary source of motivation was entirely personal - I wanted to lose some weight. It turns out that I lost about 15 pounds during my first six months as a runner, and that was strong motivation to keep going.

If you don't have kids, and your weight is not a problem, motivation can still be found in other areas. My next tip for beginning runners details one of the things that really helped to keep me going at the beginning of my running life:

Tip #2 - Sign Up for a Road Race I'm extremely competitive with myself, and one of the things that initially got me running was a deal that my wife and I made to sign up for and run a 4-mile road race on the 4th of July, 2007. When I signed up for the race, I had never run more than about three miles in one go, and four miles seemed like an astronomical increase over that. Signing up for the race and paying money to reserve my spot gave me a goal to train for, and because I'm not a quitter, there was no way I was going to back out. If you're even the slightest bit competitive (even if just with yourself), signing up for a local 5k is probably one of the best things you can do to motivate yourself to keep running. For me, racing hooked me in a way I never would have anticipated, and running races is one of my prime motivators for training to this day. It also introduced me to a whole "running world" that I didn't even know existed. In every town there are like-minded people who run crazy distances simply for the fun of it. These people are among the most open and friendly people I have met, and their enthusiasm for running can be infectious. If you want to gain entry into this little slice of the world, start by going to some road races - I guarantee that you won't regret it.

So lets now assume that you have some source of motivation to get you off of the couch and onto the road or trail. What follows are the lessons I learned from personal experience that I think are the most important to pass on to a beginner who has made the decision to start running.

Tip #3 - Get Appropriate Running Shoes I can't emphasize enough how important this tip is. When I say "appropriate" running shoes, this doesn't mean to head to your local sporting goods store to pick out the coolest shoe in the "running" section. What most people don't realize is that each of us has a particular type of running gait. The way our legs move, the way our feet hit the ground - each of us is a little bit different. When it comes to running shoes, you want to be sure that you find a pair of shoes that is suitable for your particular gait. How do you do this? The best way is to go to a specialty running store where they will analyze your gait (usually for free) and let you try out a few pairs of shoes by running around the block. Any good running store will do this, and getting the right pair of shoes for your body and gait type will go a long way toward making your transition into running go more smoothly. It will also to help minimize any chance of injury that might arise from making an uniformed choice of the wrong shoe simply because you like the way it looks. Finding the best shoe for you can take some trial-and-error, but it is well-worth the effort.

Tip #4 - Start Slow and Run Short When you first start running, it is best to begin by running slowly for relatively short distances. Running will be a lot more enjoyable if you don't overdo it to the point where it becomes hard and starts to hurt. So, consciously and repeatedly tell yourself to slow down. If you need to walk, do it. When you're out on the road by yourself, nobody is going to care if you take a walk break, and if this helps you to keep running, then it's worth it to do so. For me, when I used to run sporadically before May 2007, I felt like I wasn't getting any benefit unless I pushed myself to the limit. This made running unpleasant, and explains in large part why the habit never clicked. By approaching my development as a runner this time around as a long-term process, it became enjoyable, and I eventually got to the point where running harder and longer was a joy rather than a chore. I found that every increase in run distance was a new milestone, and triggered a desire to go even farther. This culminated in my decision to run a marathon in May 2008, one year after I began running, and that was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Tip #5 - Track Your Effort If you need help tracking your effort, purchase a heart-rate monitor or a running computer. For beginning runners who own an Ipod Nano, the Nike+ system is a good choice. It's cheap (Tip #6 - Eat and Drink Appropriately This probably goes without saying, but fueling and hydrating properly for your runs is critical. If you eat something (even just a Powerbar or similar product) an hour or so before you run, and hydrate well, your runs will be much more pleasant. Starving yourself to lose weight while running is counterproductive and should be avoided at all costs. Your body needs fuel to power your muscles on the run, and it needs fuel to repair any damage that occurs after you run. If you deprive yourself of fuel, your desire to run will fizzle away. One additional note about hydrating - if you run in the summer or in a hot area of the country, be wary of your hydration level. When it's really hot I generally carry water with me. Sometimes I carry it in hand, sometimes I use a water bottle belt, and for longer runs I use a Camelbak hydration pack. Dehydration can be dangerous, and is easily avoided with proper preparation.

Tip #7 - Find Something to Pass the Time Some running purists prefer to avoid all electronic devices while running. I however, am a gadget freak, and can't bear to run without my Ipod Nano attached to my arm (except during races - for that I go without). Listening to good music on a hard run can be incredibly motivational, and there are times when music alone can pull me through a tough patch. For long runs or slower, easier runs I like to download podcasts from Itunes or audiobooks from my local library's digital audiobook download site. Most library's offer these digital downloads now, and although MP3 player compatibility can be an issue at times, there are ways to overcome this and downloads are typically free with a library card. Listening to audiobooks on the run has opened up a whole new world of options for me, and there are times when I'm so engrossed in what I'm listening to while running that it feels almost effortless.

Tip #8 - Run with a Partner I tend to run solo or with my dog (who is a great running companion by the way), but many runners thrive on running with friends/family/co-workers. Having a partner helps to pass the time, conversation on the run generally forces you to slow down, and having a partner to keep you honest helps to prevent lapses in dedication to the sport.

Tip #9 - Join a Running Club Most towns/regions support local running clubs. Generally, these clubs cater to people of all levels and abilities, and joining one can be a great source of motivation. Meeting other local runners provides an avenue for learning about new running routes in your area, and they can be rich source of information and advice for beginning runners. Check out the Road Runners Club of America RRCA for information on finding a local club in your area.

Tip #10 - Join an On-Line Running Forum On-line forums are a great place to find information and advice on running. There are tons of running forums out there, so finding one to your liking should not be hard. A few examples are the Runner's World Magazine Forums, the dailymile.com Forums, the Runner+ Forums, and the Cool Running Community Forums. Even if you aren't an active contributor, reading through the collective knowledge on these forum sites can be incredibly beneficial.

I could probably go on-and-on with tips like those presented here, but I'll cut it off at 10 for now. Probably the most important pieces of advice I can give to beginning runners are to stick with it and to have fun. As your running progresses, you'll begin to experience both physical and mental changes that you might never have expected. Running improves the health of your body, but it also can change your mind (it's a great stress reducer for one thing), and once you're hooked, there's no turning back.

Before the Hydration Backpack! Find Out How Johnny Did Without

Back in the days before the hydration backpack, Johnny (fictitious character) was mountain trail riding with his water bottle securely attached to his sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Bike frame. When Johnny decided to hydrate himself while extensively riding the winding trails, he decided to reach down and grab his bottle when a tree suddenly jumped out in front of Johnny!

Johnny swerved to get out of the way, but it was too late! He crashed, taking an enormous tumble on some rocks! As Johnny finished counting the little birdies flying around his head, he noticed that his water source flew over the mountainous cliff and now Johnny was out of H2O to quench his extreme thirst.

What's Johnny to do now? He's miles from the next water source, and his injury is going to keep him out of commission for a while. Johnny soon realizes he's becoming very dehydrated as the hot afternoon sun is beating down on him that day. As Johnny sat under a tree to keep cool, he tended to his wounds and collected enough strength to get up. There's a problem, though. During the cycling crash, Johnny damaged his sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Bike, and now he has to walk the trail all the way back.

Johnny's safety is now in jeopardy because he has to trek several miles in the heat with no water, and getting hydrated is not in the picture for several hours. Dehydration was now a major concern, and unfortunately Johnny had no choice but to deal with the situation at hand. Now if it was the future, and Johnny knew that one day there would be hydration backpacks available, do you think he would have purchased one for his next outdoor adventure? You better believe he would have!

It's now winter and Johnny's ordeal back in the summer is now a distant memory. Johnny has now packed his snowboard gear to head back to the mountains for some extreme boarding in some fresh powder. As Johnny arrives at the top, he notices that there are untouched trails with no tracks whatsoever, and he excitedly attempts to take on this un-chartered territory.

Johnny grabs his so-called water source and takes a big swig before he heads down the secluded trail. He's making great time and as he's cutting through the powder with precision, you won't believe what happens next! A tree jumped out into Johnny's path and knocks him out cold. When Johnny awoke, he noticed his board was split in half, and those birds flying around his head came back, but this time the birdies brought friends.

What's Johnny to do now? No one has been down this path for the entire day, and just by looking at his situation, there's a slim chance anyone will find him. Lucky for him, the day is somewhat warmer than other days, and he's extremely thirsty. As Johnny starts to walk back up the mountain in the deep snow, he is getting tired and thirstier. Johnny starts to think back now to his summer experience, and then said to himself, here I go again!

Johnny didn't even make it halfway up the steep hill when he soon realized that he was completely out of water. Now, not only was he out of necessary H2O, but he also didn't bring a backpack with him so he did not have any spare dry clothes, or any safety items to assist him in emergencies such as this. Johnny was in a pickle again, and it was clear that he didn't learn his lesson from the last incident when he was severely dehydrated and almost never made it back.

If Johnny had a hydration pack at that moment with a reservoir full of water, and with an additional bladder in his pack for backup, do you think his situation would have been better? You bet it would have!

Johnny Finally Learned His Lessons, And Seeks Out A Hydration System!

Johnny decides that enough was enough, and he started to search the Internet to find himself a system that could take care of his hydrating needs, especially under emergency situations that he has experienced in the past. As Johnny typed in "hydration systems", he noticed that these really cool and functional hydration backpacks were popping up online, and he was extremely fascinated.

When Johnny started to read further, you could see the excitement come over him. He was like a Camel at an Oasis party, and he was absorbing all the information available to him. Johnny quickly noticed there were several backpack models and many styles to choose from. He was planning his next adventure, and with a complete hydrating system with ample bag storage, he would finally feel confident that he would remain fully hydrated, and be completely equipped with all his necessities.

The summer rolls around again, and Johnny decides to go kayaking and do a little camping as well. A tree fell out of the woods right on top of Johnny's head and knocked him out of his kayak. Can you believe his luck? In most sports we tend to think of hydration as critical. If you are engaged in physical sports, you are sweating and its very obvious that you need to replace the fluids which you are losing.

However, hiking or trekking are activities where the body actually losses a significant amount of fluid, but over sometimes prolonged amounts of time. This means the hiker is often less aware that they are starting to suffer the effects of dehydration.

Taking on board water or a sports drink is simple enough, and there is no shortage of equipment to help. Hydration packs and water bottles are very available, but the key thing to bear in mind is not to wait until you feel thirsty before you start drinking. Especially when enjoying an activity such as hiking were dehydration could be less obvious.

Bicycling Gear - Seven of My Favorites

My days of running for pleasure and exercise ended when I
moved to the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. I had been
living in the relatively flat Willamette River Valley where
there were miles of level bark running trails. Now in the
Gorge, I encountered rocky, steep trails that were torture
to my hips and knees. It was time to find a replacement for
running.

The Gorge of the Columbia River is a recreation mecca
that's especially attractive to mountain sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Bike riders and
windsurfers. Swimming doesn't appeal to me, so I decided
to check out mountain biking. In the end, that was among
the best decisions I've made, but I began with caution.
For one thing, I didn't know if my interest would last.
That's why I started by getting a low-end sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Bike (that had
some serious weight problems) It was a clunker, looking
back on it now. I also held back on investing in some of
the biking 'gear'. It's not that I'm cheap - it's just
that much of it seemed to be for hip-ness instead of
usefulness.

However, after using a few of the items, I understood that
while the gear might make you look 'cool', it also really
does help you function better. Here are 7 of my favorite
pieces that I didn't think I'd care about (back in my post-
runner/pre-sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Biker days) and now I wouldn't dream of being
without.

1. Padded shorts. If you mountain sports%20outdoors" title="Buy Bike">Bike, road bike, or
both, make the investment in having these. Purely and
simply, your ride will be more comfortable.

2. Well-vented helmet. You've got to buy a helmet anyway,
right? If you don't wear one you're crazy. Spend the
extra bucks to get one made of the super-strong material
that affords lots of vents to help keep you from over-
heating. And in the case of helmets, you get what you pay
for: the higher-end helmets are easier to adjust for a
better fit.

3. Pedals and shoes with cleats (clipless). After a bit
of a learning curve on how to release quickly and be able
to lock-in going up hill, clipless becomes as automatic as
shifting gears. You especially notice the benefits when
you're road-biking; you're gaining on the entire stroke
instead of only the downward push.

4. Hydration pack (a backpack with a water-bladder -
Camelbak brand is an example). My first one was a gift, or
I might never have tried one. Now I love having 100 ounces
of water easily available, instead of that goofy move where
you have to reach down and get the water bottle out of the
rack, lift your head to drink - losing sight of the trail,
and then fumbling the water bottle back into the rack. No
wonder I hardly ever drank enough during rides and ended up
slightly dehydrated every time. I also appreciate that the
pack holds my keys, cell phone, energy bar, and rain jacket.

A suggestion: You'll still want to keep a full water
bottle on your bike. It's good defense against dogs that
chase you. Get good at your aim and you can land a squirt
without missing a stroke. It's very satisfying, and the dog
will run away.

5. Safety goggles - yellow. Of course, you should have
protection for your eyes, but I wondered about the
necessity of yellow or orange lenses. Seemed like poser-
gear when I began to see them around. Then I used a pair.
What difference in visibility! The yellow lenses really do
brighten up shady trails and they help you a lot during
overcast or lower-light times of day.

6. Half-finger gloves. The palms are padded, so that
feels nice on long rides. The best part is what they do
for you on wipe-outs, which are bound to happen. I've
gotten lots of scraped knees, but my hands always come out
feeling fine.

7. The Bike. Once I realized that biking was not only a
great alternative to running for the sake of my joints, but
it was more fun in general, I gave the clunker away. Then
I invested in a good bike - lightweight frame and
components, with suspension. It's a pure delight to ride
on a well-made machine.

The first thing you need to know about the Nalgene OTG (On-the-Go) water bottle is that it's designed to be carried upright, NOT upside-down! This is the trade-off for having the nifty, easy-to-drink-from, flip-up lid. The folk at Nalgene explain this on their website. (Specifically, this bottle was designed to meet the demand for a Nalgene bottle with an easy-to-open lid. Mission accomplished, only it can't be carried upside-down).

This trade-off may not suit the needs of some, but I'm happy with it. For me, it's no bother to carry my bottle upright -- especially if it spares me the hassle of unscrewing lids, dealing with unsanitary straw contraptions, or having to suck like a gerbil just to get a drink of water.

If you mess up, don't get embarrassed, stumble over your words, then stop. Most people don't know when you mess up or not. Just keep going like you didn't even notice. Since the audience doesn't know your speech, they will not know the difference. If you stop then make it noticeable, you will become embarrassed and lose confidence.

Realize that the more you do public speaking, the less stressful it will eventually become. You need to practice over and over before you become more comfortable doing it. While this might not sound like a good advice to newer public speakers, in time it does get easier to deal with the stress.

I drink a lot of water so I figured it was about time to invest in a nice water bottle. I got the Camelbak stainless steel model with the blue wave design on it. I love this water bottle! The design is so pretty and it doesn't rub off. My water stays cold and it never has that awful plastic taste to it. I also like the trademark straw. It snaps down easily and is spill proof. I like that I don't have to twist off a top in order to get to my water. The 0.75 liter bottle fits in any cup holder at my gym or car. Don't look anywhere else. This one is the best!

This design from CamelBak is well thought out. It has a wide mouth, which facilitates cleaning and adding ice cubes. It has a straw, so it can be drunk without tilting one's head way back (this might be a great feature for cyclists). It is nicely leak proof, and it has a handle that can be clipped with a caribiner or hung from a finger (I frequently hang mine from my little finger when my hands are full getting in and out of the car). It is sturdy--I've dropped mine, both full and empty from counter height onto a tile floor w/o damaging it. Finally, it disassembles for cleaning. The nipple and straw can be removed and cleaned or replaced. I've noticed that mine needs to be cleaned about once each month.

The biggest drawback with this design is that if one fills it with ice, condensation will form and wet whatever it's set on. There are, however, insulating sleeves that will mitigate this.

This particular design is catchy. I bought it for my wife who loves it. It replaces a cheap drugstore soft-plastic sipper that kept losing its straw.

I already own a decent day pack, and was looking for a hydration solution (water bottles are nice, but cumbersome to carry and require stopping to remove from side pockets to drink). My pack doesn't really have a good compartment for a bladder, and I was concerned that an unprotected bladder could get damaged by other items in the bag.

The UnBottle (I purchased the 3 liter version, but there is a smaller 2 liter version as well) is an insulated bag with a bladder insert - it's relatively light when empty and is easy to fill. The large opening seals nicely (a bit tough to open, but this is a good thing, as it avoids leakage). The opening also sports a plastic ring with a handle to facilitate filling - holding it by the handle allows the bladder to open as the water enters. The bag insulates pretty well - it kept water at a reasonably cool temperature even in high heat (90's) or in a hot car. The one drawback is that the drinking hose is not insulated - the tube can be snugged into the insulated bottle, but some part has to be exposed if you want to drink - that water gets hot fairly quickly. The bite valve with the lock is a useful feature, though - much less chance of leakage.

The size is as described - it's a bit longer than the bladder inside (as it has to be), and weighs 7-8 pounds when full - but that's mostly water weight (water bottles would be heavier and bulkier for the same amount of hydration). The UnBottle packs pretty easily - it can be folded to fit in a pack when empty, but it's really much easier to carry on the outside (full or not).

The UnBottle (has "snap clips" that allow it to be affixed to an existing bag (using whatever protrusions/straps are available on the bag) - although they are a bit widely spaced apart for my current bag (I have to scrunch the UnBottle a tiny bit to affix them). I was originally concerned that the plastic snap clips wouldn't be very durable, but they've lasted a summer field season without wear. The snaps can be hard to close, but that's a good thing (again) - the clips are secure and not likely to pop open accidentally. They're sturdy but flexible enough to be slid around straps or rings on the outer part of a pack.

The bottle also has a single carry strap, which is really not long enough to do much with (it's maybe 8 inches total length), but has snap closure so you can hook it around other items (I can hang it around one post of an adjustable headrest while driving, but it's not long enough to go around both). I usually use this to stabilize the bottle on the back of my pack - the strap goes around the top handle of the pack and keeps the bottle from leaning too far back. It's not long enough to sling over a shoulder, though, so it's not a good primary carrying solution. (I'm thinking I need to get a second strap to extend this one for short non-pack hikes).

I'm very happy with my purchase, with only two minor disappointments - the uninsulated hose means you get few swallows of rather hot water before the cooler water from the bottle gets to you, and the "carry strap" on the top is too short to be really useful.

How to Start Running - 10 tips for beginners from someone who's been there

It's a funny saying that goes cross-country runners like throwing around that something like this: "Our sport is your sports punishment. Unfortunately, this quote brings more than a grain of truth - most people who simply hate to run. Running is hard, it takes time that could be spent to run with others, and for many people it is painful, uncomfortable, and not less fun. Ask any athlete serious long distance, and one can say that they despiseSometimes we receive from friends and colleagues about the fact they run. I can not say how many times people have told me that now I'm on my knees, ruin, or that we, as people did not want to travel long distances (which, as a professor of anatomy and evolutionary biologist, I disagree with all heart). So how can we overcome this fear and contempt for everything, do something to run? In this article you 10 tips on what helped me in the first months after releaseMy transition from a couch-dwellers to become a full-fledged runner.

I officially started as a trade mark May 2007, the day that way. When I say run, I mean really run, jog and not just a few miles here or there, if I like it, feel it. May 2007 when I started to call myself a real runner when I started a habit that sticks with me to this day, and as part of my life that I myself could not imagine living without it. Before that time, it worked for me, asthe word at the beginning of this article in full game, as a form of self-punishment. I did it because when it was for me to be good, or because a coach told me the time to do it with some practice - I have done, but enjoy. That all began to change for me when I started gaining weight after the birth of my two children. I realized that I had in my 30 now, and if I wanted to take control of my health, I begin to seriously pursue. This leads me toMy first suggestion:

Tip # 1 - find a source of motivation for me, children, the main thrust for the beginning of my habit of running. I wanted my health under control, and I was able to stay up to date with two young children as they grew more and more active. To date, one is my main motivation for running a good example of the importance of physical activity with them. A second source of motivation was entirely personal - I wanted to lose some weight.It turns out that I lost about 15 pounds during my first six months as a runner, and had stronger motivation to continue.

If you do not have children, and the weight is not a problem, the motivation can be found in other areas. My advice to the details of the next top runners of the things that helped me a lot, I go to the beginning of my life running:

Tip # 2 - Sign up for a road race is very competitive with me, and one of the things that initially Iimplementing an agreement that my wife and I went to a road race at 4 miles will be July 4, 2007. When I signed for the race, I had never run more than about three miles in a go, and four miles seemed an astronomical increase over them. Registration for the race and the payment of money to reserve my seat gave me a goal to train, and because I'm not a quitter, there was no way I would leave. If you are the least competitive (even though) only with himselfRegistering a local 5k is probably one of the best things you can do to motivate yourself to go forward. For me, the race that has impressed me in some ways I never expected, and the race is one of my first motivation for training until today. It took me, but also exported to a whole "world" that I do not even know existed. In every town there are like-minded people to run distances mad, just for fun. These people are among the most open and friendly people I met, andtheir enthusiasm for the task can be contagious. When you start in this small segment of the world, start winning some road races - I guarantee you will not regret it.

Sun can now assume that you have some source of motivation to get you off the couch and on the road or path. What follows are the lessons I learned from personal experience that I believe that the key to running past the beginner who has taken the decision to include.

Tip # 3 - GetHiking shoes fit I can not stress enough how important this suggestion. When I say "proper" running shoes, this does not mean that to save local products sporting the header, select the coolest shoe in the "race" section. What many do not know is that each of us has some kind of rolling. The way to move your legs, just as down to earth - each of us is a bit 'different. When it comes to running shoes, you want to be sure to find a pairShoes, suitable for your particular gait. How do you do this? The best way is to go to a specialty running store, where they try their gear (usually analyzed charge) and have a few pairs of shoes around the block. Any good running store will do this, and the right pair of shoes and gear for your body type is a long way to make the big step go go more smoothly. It 'also to minimize any risk of injury that may result fromthat a uniform choice of the wrong shoes, because his appearance. Search for the best shoe for you to participate in some trial and error, but worth the effort.

Tip # 4 - Slow Start, Run Short The first time is best to start slowly and for relatively short distances. Perfect to add to the drink bottles. We bought the first bottle to use during an outdoor project that involved sand. Hoping these bottles would stop sand from blowing into our water. We have since bought more, plus smaller ones for our grandchildren. Our kids have bought them for their homes. These are excellent drink bottles. Works good, Got it for a good price ().

My only complaint is that my water bottle (.75 L) only lasts me about 15 minutes on a bike ride when I have this adapter hooked up (which is good because I am drinking more water... but means I have to carry a refill).

If you plan on using it a lot, skip out on converting your bottle and just get one of those actual pouch thingys.

If you do get this, get one of those Camelbak "Camel clips" for so you can clip the straw to your shirt, other wise (unless you have a back pack that pulls the straw up through your back pack strap) your mouth piece will just dangle inaccessibly.

My son just got this as a Christmas gift, we do a lot of bike rides, hikes, etc. and carrying water is always an issue. So, everybody got a Camelbak as a gift! My son put this on and was drinking from it on Christmas day until it got 'too heavy!' for him. I have not closely inspected this yet, but the only thing that seems to be missing is a little pocket for kid stuff. Some of the larger adult versions have pockets, and I think that kids universally love pockets for their stuff. Otherwise, this is going to be great once it's biking weather!

Surfing, swimming, inline skating, jogging, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, and a variety of team sports are just the tip of the iceberg for our activities during the summer.

We are all taught that we drink enough> The water during the workout. Many healthcare providers recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, and in summer or during the workout. What is not said that drinking more than this can dilute important minerals and electrolytes that can cause all sorts of problems. I learned this firsthand during a bicycle tour in the Midwest is one of the most severe heat waves, Missouri has seen in the month of June! I have been using this product for a couple of weeks and love it. I would agree with other users' comments that the bottle will bounce a little bit on the run if it is full. I have found this bounce goes away once 1/4 of the bottle is empty. The only downside to this product is the fact that it doesn't have the CamelBak straw system - it's just a water bottle with squeeze function. The pouches on the product hold a ton of gear for a basic run - several Gu's, ID, keys, an iPod.

I made the switch to stainless steel bottles about a year ago. I purchased a 27-ounce Klean Kanteen Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottles, and a Built NY neoprene tote Built Neoprene 20-Ounce Capacity Bottle Tote, Black to help insulate the bottle. (The 20-ounce tote fits the 27-ounce bottle perfectly. The water stayed cool for a while, but I was not too impressed. Still, I used this combination bottle/tote for a year, until about a month ago, I saw this CamelBak insulated bottle, and decided to give it a go. I fill it up with cold water, and six hours later it's still cold. I am very impressed. I usually drink the water gone within a few hours, but on those occasions that I don't, it's good to know that the water will stay cold longer. The insulation is so good, if I fill it up with filtered water from the tap at night, then put it in the fridge, the next morning the water is not completely cold. Therefore, I now always make sure to fill it up with cold water at night before I put it in the fridge.

Regarding the bite valve: As soon as I tried using the bite valve to drink from the bottle, I didn't like it. Personal opinion. Some may like the valve to drink from, and others might not. So for me, I just took the valve off, and I have no problem drinking directly from the little stub-like hard plastic straw (this is what the valve attaches to). I even threw the valve away, since I didn't need it.
